WMATA has developed and implemented an EMS for the following WMATA facilities:

 
 
WMATA was chosen by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), along with ten other transit agencies across the U.S., to participate in a 2-year (2003-2005) EMS training program. WMATA Safety and Environmental Management chose Greenbelt Rail Yard to be the fenceline for the pilot program.
 
What is an Environmental Management System (EMS)?

An EMS is a set of management processes and procedures that enables WMATA to analyze, manage and reduce the environmental impact of its activities and increase it’s operating efficiency. WMATA’s EMS is built on the ISO 14001 International Standard and the "Plan, Do, Check, Act" model.
